OREPUKI.
All work and no pla} l- makes J ohn a dull boy, but I think the adage might at this time be parodied to read all play and no work has a similar result. There was very little effort made locally to provide amusement for the holidays, so most of our folks went farther afield to enjoy themselves. We had splendid weather —dry and hot. Hew Year’s Day, however, was an exception to the usual routine of dullness, for the latelyformed Oi’epuki Racing Club held a very successful meeting in a paddock kindly lent by Mr George Printz. There were eight events, with a {prize list of £4O, and all the races were well filled and closely contested. There was a very large attendance of Orepukians, besides a considerable contingent from Riverton. A local gentleman worked a primitive “ tot” at 5s tiekets, and was fairly patronised. Mr F. Wilson had a booth on the ground, and didgoodbiz. In the intervals of the races a number of prizes were run for by the children, who had a very jolly time of it, and afforded much amusement to the old folks, Mr and Mrs Thomson, of Riverton, superintended the sports and awarded the prizes. A very enjoyable dance wound up the holidays, and now the miners are waiting for a good fall of rain to make a start for another year of hard work. A very nasty accident happened a few days ago to Mr O. Reichel, who was lopping a tree on his claim, when a large limb from above him fell, striking him on the loins. He had to be almost carried home, taking four hours to accomplish the short distance, and fainted several times on the way. DrHelson was speedily in attendance. The young man is now doing well, and will soon be about again.
