THE SCHOONER DAPHNE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — In your “log” of the wrecks khat have happened at the Aucklands you included the schooner Daphne. The Daphne w r as not lost at the .Aucklands. She was chartered for the purpose of getting the gold off the General Grant, but failed to find it. Then she came to Hew Eiver, Invercargill wharf. Mr John Macpherson •engaged hie to take the Daphne up to Melbourne, and I delivered her there as per charter. What became of her I do not know, but she was not lost at the Aucklands. —Yours, etc., Angus McLean. [Our authority, duly acknowledged, was the Otag’o Daily Times. We are informed that while the schooner was .at the Auckland Islands a number of lier crew went away in a boat on some purpose connected with her mission, and were never heard of again. The men left on board,- three in number, brought her back to the Hew Diver. The loss of the greater part of the Daphne’s crew has no doubt led to Jhe statement being made that she was wrecked there. In the Votes and Proceedings of the Provincial Council •of Southland reference is made to “ the expedition of the schooner Daphne in search of castaways ” between July and October, 1870. Ho doubt this object was combined with the quest mentioned by our correspondent. — Ed.]
