OTAUTAU

Messrs A. Carmichael and J. C. Ellis, J.P.’s, presided at the sitting of the R.M. Court held on’Wednesday. In the following defended cases judgments were given for plaintitt tor amounts claimed :-G. Groves v. C. Outsell, £8 17s 4d costs £1 11s ; Same v. T. O’Donnell, £9 12s, costs £1 • Same v. Gustavus Morton, £/ 16s 2d, costs £1 Us. In the case Groves v. Markey, claim £1 ] 9s lld ’ -judgment was given for defendant, who had advertised that he would not he responsible for debts contracted by his wife, costs £1 Is. A sitting of the Police Court was also held. James Harvey (teacher at North Wairio) v. Mary Hey loncharge of assault as it appeared from the evidence, in the belief that the complainant had unduly punished her son. After hearing lengthy evidence defendant was fined Island costs. The same defendant was also charged with a breach of the Education Apt in having caused a disturbance in a public school, and for this was fined £1 and costs. A still further charge—Same v. Same—of using insulting language was dismissed. John Nay lon charged James Harvey with having’ assaulted his son. After hearing the evidence, which was to the effect that the punishment was not excessive, their worships dismissed the case with costs. Mary Naylon next charged -James Harvey" with having used insulting language towards her, but the charge not being sustained by the evidence was dismissed with costs. A counter charge of exactly the same nature was also dismissed with costs. The financial results of the show held here on the 6th inst, as far as known at present, leave a credit balance of over £4O. This is a striking contrast to the results in previous years when the show was held in Riverton, and proves the wisdom of the appointment of the new officebearers, and also that Otautau is more central for the exhibitors than Riverton.

The triennial election of the Otautau River Board takes place on the 9th. January.
