Progress of Invercargill.
(By F. and 0.)
In order to ascertain to what extent the town has advanced in the way of buildings within the last two years, we have obtained the followinginformation by driving’ through and around the town, and taking note of each building completed within that time. The result of our research discloses the fact that since the end of 1891 over 80 new buildings have been constructed within the town and in its immediate vicinity. Of the number 62 are dwellinghouses, the remainder consisting - of shops, factories, and offices. Of the residences, 45 have been erected on the “ Flat ” between Tyne street and Appleby, nine between Tay and Gala streets, and the remainder* in the suburbs. The majority of these are of ordinary size. There are, however, a few exceptions, such as Mrs Hall’s, Gala street, Mr Johnston's* Leet street, Mr Spite’s, Yarrow street, Mr Smith’s, Tay street, and Mr Corbett’s, Tweed st. Of the factories and business places, Messrs Kingsland, Don street, Raeside, Esk street. Southland Farmers* Implement and Engineering - Company’s factory, Leven street, and Union Brewery, Tweed street, are the most important. The most handsome and costly, however*, are the Invercarcargill Club, in Don street, and the recent addition to the post office. Besides completed buildings it may be worthy of mention that a large number of additions (many of which in size and cost are equal to new buildings) have been erected. Among them we may note the extension of Deschler’s Hotel, Lewis and Co.’s warehouse, News Office and Princess Hotel. The progress shown by these figures is the more gratifying when we consider that for four or five years previous to 1891 scarcely a dozen buildings were erected; and it is further very satisfactory to know that, almost without exception, the new houses are occupied.
