BLUFF NOTES.
The weather during the week has been very trying. But the holidays are fast approaching and we console ourselves with the reflection thatjif we are to have it, sooner now than then. The influenza epidemic has returned faithfully to time as usual, but n a more aggravated and painful form. One or two severe cases have been reported, and it is to be hoped the like will not become general. The long deferred cricket match between the second offthe I. C. C. and the local eleven was played on the latter’s ground on Wednesday, but owing to insufficient time could not be contested to a finish, stumps were drawn in time to allow the visitors to catch the evening train home, honours being then even. The concert promoted by the Bluff Brass Band duly came off as per advertisement, and was a pronounced success. The various instrumental and vocal selections met with much acceptance, and the band’s selections and debut generally exceeded the most sanguine expectations. The impression created was so favourable that they have been engaged to play for the forthcoming regatta. Anderson, the boat-builder, more commonly known as “Scoot,” has just finished his latest creaticn in boats, and from the opinion expressed by the knowing ones she is a “ heeler ” and will have to be reckoned with on the 2nd prox. The ship Wairoa arrived on Thursday morning from Port Chalmers. She will put out part cargo and load wool outwards. The barque Othello sailed for Sydney same day, and the Chitoor on Friday. The Crusader has taken in all her grain cargo, and will finish off with wool.
