MATAURA NEWS.
The local rifle club have decided to open fire on the 20th inst.,and to have a prize competition on Christmas Day. A committee was formed to canvass for prizes. The pits and ranges have been completed satisfactorily. d he school closes on the 22nd inst. for three weeks’ holidays after a very successful examination. The committee have received intimation from the Education Board of a visit from Mr Boyd, truant inspector. We have little need of him, as there is an average attendance of 212'9 out of a total of 240, and one day there were 241 present. The broken weather is interfering sadly with the shearing, but nevertheless a few bales of wool are to be seen on their way to the railway. Our township is ever advancing. There
are three new houses in various stages of construction. . , I, . • Messrs Beattie and Coster have opened up a lignite pit oh Mr H. Cameron’s property. There is a probability of our annual picnic, which has been held for fifteen years, falling through, 'ihe picnic is becoming too large to manage comfortably. There were between 800 and 900 people present last year.
