year. A meeting of the regatta committee and . those interested therein will be held in the .Harbour Hoard office this evening. Die brass band is making rapid strides towards proficiency, and, as it will be a • decided acquisition to the town, lovers of •music should not let an opportunity slip of encouraging the members thereof. The opportunity will present itself at the begin- - iiing of Hie month, when the band purpose giving a concert. A great number of excursionists visited us last Wednesday' despite the counter-attractions elsewhere. Ho doubt as the summer advances . mid the weather becomes more settled, the Wednesday excursion trips to the port will (become very popular. liegarding borough council matters, it has been decided that tiie new bylaw re cattle be held in abeyance for three months from Ist December. The baths have been leased to J. E. ST orris at an annual rental of £3, and the public area to P. Georgeson at £S 2s - 6d. The tender of W. Parsons for cartage • .has been accepted. James Carey has been appointed assistant surfaceman at Gs 8d per day. The Hon. J. G. Ward, when addressing the electors took occasion to remark that there was not a finished drain or path in the borough and strongly urged that the council should go in for a loan and carry out a •systematic scheme of public works. The Ikon, gentleman added that the council could ■easily obtain £IO,OOO on security of the present revenue, and he believed it could be so that the interest thereon could be paid without diminishing the present revenue. A case of diphtheria has been reported during the week. The patient, however, is progressing favourably, and every precaution • iias been taken to prevent infection. There is very little stir in shipping matters. 'The Crusader has taken in tallow and a few • bales of wool. '1 here should be move of her ■cargo ready for shipment next week. The Sarah and Mary is loading timber for Lyttelton and will ho ready to sail with the first vfctir wind.
