CAPTAIN J.E. HAWKINS.
C aptain John Edward Hawkins, commanding officer of the Invercargill City Guards, Joined the Invercargill Artillery Cadets, commanded by Captain James Thomson, late major, commanding the Southland Volunteer District, in April, 1877, and in the following year transferred to the company he now commands, the then commanding officer being Captain W. E. Hey wood, N.Z. militia. Was soon promoted to the rank of Lance Sergeant, filling the post of Secretary to the Corps, and la's- the rank of Sergeant; was elected Lieutenant in the year 1884, and Captain in 18i>7; is an average shot, and takes a keen interest in all shooting matches, having held during his service a place in the shooting team. Captain Hawkins holds the N.Z. Volunterer Long Service Medal for 16 years continuous service.
Since-the late Captain Hey wood severed his connection with the corps, it has. been commanded by Major Scandrett, Keserve, and Captain Kohn, now commanding the Auckland City Guards. The corps has been in existencee for nearly a quarter of a century, and at the present moment numbers 6d strong, out of a maximum strength of 63. Last year the corps, when inspected by Col. Fox, commanding the N.Z. forccva, earned for itself a very favourable report, the officers and men being complimented by the Colonel on the ir drill.
