MATAUEA. The long talked of bazaar in aid of the funds of the local brass band came off last week. It was a great success both financially and otherwise, there being plenty of articles of every variety for sale, and side shows galore. Stalls for the sale of soft goods were presided over by the Misses Cameron, Crofts, Kay, MacLeod, Palmer, and B. Shanks;the flower stall by Misses M. Cameron and Mackay ; and the refreshment stall by Misses Fowler and N. Shanks. The side shows were attended to by Messrs Dempster, Cotton, Bevan, Galt, Connor, and Stewart; and the Christmas Tree by Mr J. Dickson. The phonograph, which was made by Mr H. Stewart after, as he said, years of labour, out of old clock springs, disc harrow centres, and roofing nails, caused a great deal of amusement under the charge of the maker' and Mr David Dickie. All goods not disposed of at the stalls were sold by Mr Jas. Galt by gift auction on Friday evening. Mr Galt proved himself an able auctioneer. . The net proceeds are about £46, and the expenses being about £ll reduce the profit to about £35. After the hall was cleared and the old folks had retired, the young indulged in a dance, which was carried on till about two in the morning, the music being supplied by Messrs Bailey and G- Cameron and Miss Cameron. The Gore Wesleyan Choir gave a cantata, “ The Haymakers,” here on Wednesday, which was poorly attended, there having been a run of entertainments lately. Those who stayed at home missed a musical treat.
