BLUFF.

The examination of the school by Inspector Hendry came to an end on the 3rd inst., and, for the tenth year in succession, the report has been eminently satisfactory. The Loyal Awarua Lodge of Oddfellows celebrated the anniversasy of their institution by a ball in the drill hall on the 6th inst. Every effort has been put forth to ensure success, and the labours of the brethren were not unavailing, about 75 couplas being present. The hall was most tastefully decorated, and every provision made for comfort and enjoyment. The supper tables, under the charge of Mr Kingsland, satisfied every appetite, while the music (that importat factor in the success of a ball) was in the hands of Mr’Blackc, who was quite equal to the occasion

The petition of the local Presbyterians to the Presbytery to be admitted as a congregation, was considered by that body at their last meeting, and it was decided to forward the same to the Synod, with heartiest recommendatioas. At the last meeting of the Borough Council it was decided to inform the Harbour Board that the Council had come to the conclusion that they were not responsible for the

drifting of sand on the foreshore ; to call for tenders for grazing on the public area; and that cattle be not allowed to wander at large. Notice of motion was given that tenders be called for carting for 12 months, and the mayor was empowered to appoint an assistant surfaceman at 6s 8d per day. The ship Crusader, with part cargo from London, arrived from Dunedin last Sunday. After discharging she will remain on the berth for the incoming wool season. The barquentine Jasper, with guano from Chesterfield, also arrived on Sunday, and is now busy discharging. The Catlin, Crest of the Wave, and barque Vivid are loading timber for Lyttelton, and the barque Othello oats for Manchester on account of the J. G-. Ward Farmers’ Association. The Jerfalconer is ready for sea and will probably sail to-day.
