MARKET REPORTS

The J. Gr. Ward Farmers’ Association report having held their fortnightly sale at the Invercargill yards on the 3rd inst. The entry of fat cattle was large and the demand very limited, several of the butchers having secured outside lots, which in a sense removed them from competition in the meantime. A drop of 10s to 2§s a head was noticeable on second class cattle, while a few pens of the very best quality fairly maintained late ruling prices. Best bullocks brought £l2 to £11; medium, £7 to £8 10s; very heavy cows to £11; small and light, £6. At above prices we cleared a large entry, Store cattle, unless dairy cows, coming to full profit, were dull of sale, and a few large lines were turned out. We cleared dairy cows at £5 5s to £4 10s; store bullocks, £5 4s, and younger cattle in proportion. Sheep.—There was a medium entry in all classes, and a fair demand where the quality was right. Best wethers, 17s to 18s; medium, 14s to 15s; store maiden ewes and wethers (small). 12s 6d to 13s 6d; hoggets, of which there was a fair entry, were dull ot sale, and only at a low price could they be placed. Best medium ranged from 10s 6d to 11s 4d ; medium to small, 8s 6d to 9s 6d. These prices may be looked on as low, but taking into consideration that nearly all the tops of lamb flocks are either sent to the freezing works or the local butchers the above are fair value. We sold a pen of fat lambs from Shropshire rams on Messrs John Keid and Sons’ Monte Christo property at 14s 9d, Mr J. Leckie being the purchaser.
