THE LADIES ASSERT THEMSELVES.
At yesterday’s meeting of the Education Board a petition was read from the female teachers in the town and suburban districts asking the Board to adjust their scale of salaries so as to place women on a more equitable basis as compared with men. The petition was referred to the executive Committee for consideration and report. The signatures to it included that of Miss W. 8. Bain, who has for a number of years taken a keen interest in the matter, and who months ago addressed the Beard on the question in a letter in which the justice of the demand made by her sister teachers was strongly urged. It may now be taken for granted that something practical will be done. The question of the equal remuneration of women with men where they do the same work has come to the front of late, and will have to be faced. The reading of the petition elicited no discussion, one member simply remarking, in resigned tones, “ They’ve got the franchise,” and another, “ Yes, and they mean to use it.”
