BLUFF.

The dramatic club purpose giving an entertainment on the evening of October 4th, a feature of which will be the production of a short play of considerable merit, written by a lady member of the club, and who will sustain tiic chief character. This will be followed by a limited concert programme, after which a strong cast, aided by new scenery and effects, will occupy the boards with the play, “Taken from the French.” The all-absorbing topic of interest the last few days has been the election of three candidates to fill the vacancies in the Borough Council. The aspirants to Council honours numbered seven, and as some of them were advocates of a more progressive policy than has been pursued in the past, and others again as decidedly adverse to any departure from the old system, the outcome was, as prognosticated last week, a keen and spirited contest. The poll was declared on Thursday, and resulted in the election of Messrs Lee, Long and KichoL The Tyscr line’s s.s. Hawke’s Bay is due hereon the 18th inst. The barque An tares has been detained in port by unfavourable weather. The barquentines Dclmira and Jerfalcon and brigantine Douglas ai'e busy discharging guano. The schooner Crest of the Wave is loading timber for Lyttelton.
