HEDGEHOPE.

Our district of late lias been very quiet. Like most other country places we pass the winter in peace and contentment.

'The roads are not very good, but we mean to stir up our member of the County Council in the spring, as now is the time (on the verge of a county election) to make our wants known.

Our school attendance has dwindled down to a very low ebb, partly due to bad roads and partly to children growing out of school years and young children getting scarce, It is to be hoped parents will try and keep the attendance as good as possible. It would be a bad job to lose our teacher, as apart from being a good instructor he is a very useful man in the district. We have had a visit from the horse trainer, Sir Andrew Le Fleming, who held a class in Mr Gorman’s Yard* on the Bth inst., when a few mustered up to see poor horse’s farewell to liberty. The horse performed on was a young “ Lord of the Vale,’ supplied for the occasion by Mr J. Kidd. It was soon got under hand, and was ridden round the yard in less than two hours. Sir Andrew’s system was quick, but I doubt if most horsey men would consider it a good one in every respect* A second class was held in the same place on the 10th inst., when he performed on a nice young draught supplied by Mr Young. His pupils mustered to get their second lesson, and I think went home in most cases a little bit disappointed.
