MATAURA.
The football match, Paper Mill v. Freezing Works, won by the latter by fifteen points to nil , had a very sad termination, which you have no doubt chronicled elsewhere. Mr Masson had made a great many friends during the short time he was among us, and his untimely end has: cast a g-looin over the place. The Mataura Football Club hold a meeting on Saturday to cancel their engagements for. the season. It is rumoured that several employers in-; tend to prohibit, as far as possible, their hands playing--football. The freezing works at present .are kept very biisjq most of the men working overtime. There are at present two lots, consisting of eight thousand sheep, to be killed and frozen within three weeks. A company consisting of five gentlemen have purchased the Mataura Meat Preserving Works from Mr' Connor. They intend carrying- bn all the year round, and are at present tinning mutton. . . Measles are gradually making their presence felt, and several families are; now down with the complaint.
