MABEL.
. Everything is beautiful in its season. So it seems in this locality. The upturned soil which covers vale and hill, where previously reigned the miro and totara, with all their forest charms, shows the beauty of labour; labour which has cost the farmer many an aching limb and Aveary tread, but will also mean the building up of happy homes., What a world of change ! Only a few months back and all the boys were jovial over rabbit-trapping, and might be seen in the early dawn reaping the reward of the previous evening’s toil. But now, the enthusiasm is gone. What’s up ? Oh, Mr Bunny is getting too cunning, and the lads’ efforts are, to a great extent, in vain. The Woodlands Meat Preserving ‘Works furnish a splendid means for the utilisation of their spoil; but I think it would be more advantageous to the rising generation if some of the Mabel folk would put more value on education, and not let the rabbits interfere with it. Both teachers and committee have much reason for complaint at the careless manner in which a few of the people treat the , education of the young.
r Though our district cannot yet see the rise of. seven or- eight houses a week it can at least: boast of a new mill in course of erection, which will be a welcome addition to the neighbourhood. I
