MATAURA.
On Friday and Saturday week snow fell, preventing the football match between Gore and Mataura second fifteens. Snowball fights, a novelty here, were indulged in. On Thursday afternoon an old resident, Mrs Connor, after a long and painful illness, passed away. The funeral, which took place on Sunday, was attended by a large concom-se of people—the Rev. J. M. Davidson officiating. Mr T. Mac Gibbon, superintendent of the Presbyterian Church Sunday spoke feelingly on Mrs Connor’s death, she having been for a long time a teacher in the Sunday School. The adjourned meeting of the Mataura Literary and Debating Society was held on Tuesday night when the rules were formed by a committee and passed by the Society. Mr
Trugh was elected editor of the magazine. A short impromptu programme was gone through by volunteers. It was decided tomeet every fortnight. The brass band will play the following selections in the Square to-night: —Marches, “ The Brave Englishman,” “Albion,” “Britannia,” “The Minstrel Boy;” waltz, “The Little Flirt;” polka, “Cavendish;” schottische, “Margarite;” galop, “Off We Go.” The Mataura and Gore football teams meet at Mataura to-day to try conclusions.
