We are very much, in want of water and a good steady downpour of rain would he regarded as a positive blessing. The Tyser line’s s.s. Star of England has kept us pretty busy during the week. She has taken in a good deal of general cargo and about 2000 carcases frozen mutton. After coaling, she will sail for London direct. The young man Preston, who lost his fingers last week, is making good progress', and is out and about The subscription lists set on foot for his benefit are filling’ up well. A meeting is to be held some evening next week in connection with the Sailors Rest movement. The establishment of a “Rest” at the Bluff would no donbt prove a boon to “poor Jack,” and it is to be hoped that residents of professed philanthropic tendencies will put in an appearance. It was with much regret that some of us witnessed the departure of the engine that supplied the motive power to the local sawmill. It is a pity the industry could not be made to pay, for while the mill was working we could always manage to get cheap firewood. A number of our “old buffer” citizens, taking example by their. Invercargill brethren, have formed themselves into a football team, and challenged the local club. The match is to come off shortly, and a small admission fee will be charged, the gate-money to be handed over to young - Preston. Some of the “ old buffers” are in active training, and can be depended upon to “graft” like Trojans. The following is their team:-—H. Lee, W. Wilson, R. J. King - , Dr Torrance, B. Tall, McKeig*, R.
