A gentleman at Gisborne has received news from Lancashire of the death of his brother, aged 73, on January 21st, and his three sisters, aged 82, 78, and 88 respectively on February 12th, 13th, and 14th. The sisters died of grief at the loss of their brother. The police have summoned ten officials concerned in the fatal prize fight at Auckland. Mr "Whitney Griffiths of Blenheim has been shot dead. He saw a blackbird and went to shoot it. To do so he had to get through the study window. In jumping from the window his gun struck the ground and the concussion exploded his charge, which passed through his forehead. At a meeting held in Christchurch a motion was passed pressing upon the Government the necessity, in view of the scarcity in Canterbury of Crown lands suitable for tillage, of taking steps to reclaim the Elies* mere Lake lands, and render them available for agricultural purposes. The Customs revenue for A pril wa5£123,146, £123,146, as compared with £140,965 for last mouth, and £130,462 for April of last year. The beer duty for April was £4935, as compared with £5532 in March, and £5099 in the same month last year. Six stowaways who had got on board of the s.s. lonic at Hobart were fined at "Wellington, £5 each, in default one month’s imprisonment. Shocks of earthquake were experienced at Christchurch and Lyttelton on Moncay last. Measles are prevalent in Dunedin, and some of the schools have had to be closed.
