AUSTRALIAN.

Meiboukne, May 2. Sir Charles Lilley, Avho was to have led the labour party in the Queensland Parliament, has been defeated for North Brisbane. A meeting called in Sydney for the purpose of protesting against Home Buie was the most riotous ever held there. It was nothing but a series of free fights between the opposing factions. The result of the Queensland elections up to date is as follows: —Ministerialists, 22 ; Opposition, 2 ; Independent, 4; Labour, 4. The feeling in Melbourne is that the depositors who caused the stoppage of the National Bank were guilty of stupendous folly. The superintendent of the Bank of Australasia states that the Government did not consult his directors about proclaiming the five bank holidays, and that if they had be would, most strenuously have pointed out the grave objection to it. He states that his bank, which had large interests everywhere, felt it incumbent to maintain its credit throughout the world, and therefore the only effectual course was to open even at the risk of straining the legality of the position. The financial excitement has entirely subsided, and the following banks in Melbourne have resumed business, despithe the Government proclamation with regard to holidays r Bank of New South Wales, Bank of New Zealand, Bank of Australasia, Union Bank of Australia, and Royal Bank of Australia. The Bank of New Zealand posted a notice on the premises stating that business would he continued as usual, and that payments would be made in gold.
