I am pleased to notice that our friend Mr John McCaw has already gained the good opinions of the people of Tuapeka West, and is worthily filling the place of the late Rev. Mr Taylor. .1 congratulate the people of that district in having a gentleman of guch sterling worth as Mr McCaw settled in their midst, and can say that old and young will profit by his ministrations. His formal introduction to the congTegation took place last
evening. Another addition is being made to Main-street. Mr J. B.Dick, merchant, is erecting a two-storey brick building’ on the vacant ground next his store, it being his intention to go into the bacon-curing business, also extending his boot trade.
The.members of the Congregational church held a successful sale of work last Friday and Saturday in the Town Hall. The Mayor, in a few well-chosen Words, formally opened the sale, the result being - over £7O realised^ At a 'meeting of the Gore Rifles •on Tuesday evening, after inspection, there being a lage muster on parade, Private Domigan was elected lieutenant vice Lieutenant Souness. The return match with Riversdale was fired at Riversdale on Wednesday, resulting in a win for the Riversdale team.
The weather still continues - fine, so much so that hedges are flowering', .and currant trees in bud. Such a continuance of dry weather has not been experienced for years, numbers having' to resort to the river for their water supply. The annual meeting- of the (tore Gospel Temperance Society was held on Tuesday evening, when the officers for the ensuing year were elected. This society, like other of our associa tions, has been rather lagging, and I trust the new officers will galvanise fresh life into it, and raise it to the prominent position it held a few years ago. The Band of Hope under Mr ’-Forbes continues to increase in numbers and interest.
During tlie service in tlie Presbyterian Clmrcli on Sunday tlie Rev. Mr Aslier referred to the death of tlie Premier, and at tlie close the organist (Mr Brett) played the “ Dead March,” the congregation standing.
