MATAURA NEWS.
(PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) This town, from being a sleepy hollow, as it has sometimes been called, ‘ is now one of bustle and business. All day long we hear the clanging of hammers, proceeding from the paper mill and the different smithies and foundries, together- with the perpetual rumble of the water-wheels. Where twelve months ago everyone knew everyone, now we meet almost as many strangers as acquaintance's. The local amateurs contemplate putting another play on the boards. For any charitable object a play takes better here than a concert, however good it may be. The annual election of the school committee was held on Monday night. The district this year by increase in attendance is privileged to elect nine members of committee. After a poll the following gentlemen were elected— Messrs Balneaves, Clark, Connor, Park, Heslin, Cameron, Sleeman, Kcid and Erown. Mr Balneaves was elected chairman, and Mr Brown secretary. Miss Macandrew has been appointed pupil teacher in Miss Shanks’ place. The foundation of the new paper mill is being laid. Mr Mason, of London, superintends the erection of the works. Members of the Mataura Football Club are requested to roll out to practice this afternoon (Saturday) in view of the match with Gore, when sides will be chosen from the following players —T Smith, A Smith, G Cameron, Clark, Wade, McLeod, Hamilton, Jones, Arnitt, Burnside, Catherill, Mason, Geddes, MeGilvaiy, Tessey, C Shanks, J S Shanks, Collins, Sotham, Townsend, Isitt, Palmer, MacGregor, Muirhcad, Jas’ Galt, Jno.
