OREPUKI.
In the arrangements for taking country people to town to see Fillis’ circus, I wonder how Orepuki comes to be left out in the cold. Any number of excursions are run to Orepuki, but never one from it, which is often the subject of remark not complimentary to the Commissioners. As trains are run now, a few hours later than usual would not matter much, the ordinary train being often as late as half-past eight, whereas 7.15 is her proper time. A late train is a great inconvenience to the community here, as evening is the only time men can find to visit the post office, and when it arrives too late no mail is given out. Last Saturday the Otautau footballers paid us a visit, and tried conclusions with the local team. A stiff game was played by both sides, but the local men proved too much for the visitors, Orepuki scoring 10 points and Otautau nil. There is very little worth recording in mining matters, as water is very short, and most of the miners can only work half-time. The weather is really beautiful, and there is every, appearance of a sei’ies of clear frosty nights, which is the worst kind of weather for mining pux’poses. Two Orepuki men returned from Wilson’s River lately, and report very unfavourably of it as a field for individual entei’prise. The only hope for the field is in the reefs, and very little has been done as yet to test them. Three yonug men, brothex*s, also from hex*e, have left Wilson’s River, and are making their way inland towards Manapouri, prospecting as they go. I see that tenders are to be called for shifting the school buildings to the new site. The sooner the better, as the wintex* ’will he on us, and if not finished before then things will be in a pretty muddle.
