Football Notes.

(By Jersey) The Easter holidays have come and gone, and the first series of matches is over. The only match played in town was that between the Dunedin and Invercargill clubs last Saturday, which resulted in a win for the Dunedin club by 5 points (I goal) to nil. The game was very evenly contested, but was rather uninteresting to watch; there being no brilliant play of any kind. The visitors forwards fed their backs well, and gained a lot of ground by their good kicking at times. The local hacks played without any combination —they could hardly expect otherwise, this being the first time that they had all played together. The forwards played hard with the exception of two or three, who shirked the scrum —a very common failing at the beginning of the season. : The only other match played in Southland was the Star v. Orepuki, played at Orepuki on Friday, which resulted in a win for the Star by 17 points to nil. The hack play of the Star was altogether too much for the country team. The Linwood (Christchurch), and Union (Dunedin) match, played in Dunedin, ended in si draw. Merrivale (Christchurch) beat Melrose (Wellington) rather easily. These were the only matches of importance played during the holidays. Canterbury and Otago Unions have both held their annual meetings, and decided not to join the U.Z. Union. The local union hold their meeting next week, and are almost certain to adopt the same course. Member's of the Star club are in another column notified to attend a special general meeting next Tuesday evening at the Union rooms.
