LONG BUSH.
The harvest for this season is virtually over, only a few late patches being in the fields. Although a few weeks earlier finished than our average harvest, the weather has not been so good as the early season would lead one to expect, and had the same kind prevailed with the grain in the fields in April, as is often the case here, the results would be trying indeed. A severe storm of wind and rain almost before any grain was cut laid and tangled the crops so badly that the reapers had a difficult job out out for them, and caused many an imprecation to be hurled at the, clerk of the weather*. That individual, however, did not seem to mind much, as the same sort of weather has been experienced throughout the harvest. The crops are generally lighter than usual, but most farmers are sanguine that the yield will be good. However we will see when the thresher comes our way.
We have lost our minister, the Lev. H. Kell}’, he having accepted a call to Waimate, after a stay of nearly four years amongst us. Mr Lindsay, of your town, had actually to he brought out here the other week to conduct services at a funeral, although we are supposed to have two resident ministers amongst us. Mrs Stott, the wife of our schoolmaster, died on the 17th March after a protracted illness. The deceased lady was highly respected, and deservedly so, she being of a genial and kind hearted nature. She leaves a family' of three sons and one daughter to mourn her loss.
