RIVERTON. The all-absorbing topic at present is .the local Racing Club’s animal meeting on Easter Monday. The nominations are out, and if the acceptances are as good in proportion, the meeting will bo second to none in Southland. The stewards are sparing no pains to make it a success, and have gone so far as to' guarantee a special train from Gore to Invercargill to connect with the Riverton train on the morning of the races.

Of late big’ sheep sales have been the' order of the day. At Thornbury recently Mr John Wohlers disposed of 80 ewes at 36s each, being the highest price realised. The Gladfield flock .was sold on the '22nd, when prices were fairly well maintained. Mr Drabble has a name for the manner in which he brings the Gladfield sheep into the yards, and this year they were again up to the mark. Harvesting is about finished, and in spite of the severe weather, the crops in some instances are very good and up to the average of former years. Although the weather has been against grain crops, it has not affected the turnips, and first-class •lots' are to be seen throughout the ■district.

Of Round Hill Sludge Co. we have not heard much of late. However, they are working night and da}', so I presume they are doing all right. There was some talk a few weeks ago about the Longwood Sluicing Company having’ struck a reef, but I. cannot vouch for the truth of the statement. I should very much like to see the Company Strike something good, as they have been working a long time for very little return, and as it has been a. case pf money goingout all the time, a turn of luck would be very acceptable.
