QUEENSTOWN.

Everything very quiet. Business dull, and traders afraid of coming winter season. Mr Philp, of the Terminus Hotel, Dunedin, has bought Eichardt’s Hotel, price said to be £5,500; and Mr J. Stenhouse has sold his •tables to Mr C. Dagg. Mining, especially alluvial, is very quiet. The Premier quartz mine at Macetovra sent down a nice cake last week, going about one and a half ounces to the ton. The Phoenix is on medium stone, and there has been a small reduction of hands in consequence. Dredges at work in the district are doing better. Sew Hoy’s Co. have been getting over 100 ounces per week for the last few weeks, after being down to 30 odd ounces per week. The Sandhills dredge is averaging about 15 ounces. Ten ounces pay their expenses, and about 13 ounces per dredge for Sew Hoy’s Co. The crops are not so good as hitherto in consequence of the dry season, our usually good barley being pretty skinny; wheat is moderate and oats fair. Two or three names have been mentioned in connection with the general election. Mr Graham, mayor of Arrowtown; Mr White, farmer, Hayes Lake; and Mr J. O’Meara, late of Eichardt’s hotel, so that we will have a contest this time for the Wakatipu seat. This will be a refreshing change after two nncontested elections.
