Tin 1 List twelve months lias born a period of great activity in this township, in the building line especially. The new freezing works, constructed of brick, are just about iinished. Deep excavations were made and a foundation laid in the solid rock. The aspect of the falls has been considerably altered by masonry work in the river, which has been necessary to throw the water to either side. The water lias been divided by a Y-sltaped weir to suit the requirements of the freezing works on the one side and the paper mill on the other. Everything being nearly ready for actual work, it is expected freezing will be commenced here next week. The structure has been remarkably well finished throughout, and combines the substantial and to a degree that makes it in more ways than one a decided acquisition to the place. A new iron building and plant are coming to hand for the paper mills, the aggregate weight of the whole being 300 tons. Accommodation proving inadequate, HIT IT. Cameron is making extensive additions to bis old-established hostelry. They consist of a largo dining room, sitting, bed, and bath rooms. It is rumoured that capitalists are cn the look-out here for a site for a woollen mill. Several threshing mills arc in full swing Bowmav’s is drawn by a traction engine. Mr Galt’s Marairua farm yielded about the best crop in the district. The agricultural statistics show cur average returns to be slightly below those of last year. The Mataura Amateurs intend playing “Our Boys ” (Dailey’s siring band accompanying) at Wyndliam on Friday next.
The prices now offered for oats arc not good enough fur many of our farmers. They will thatch their stacks, and “hold ” meantime. Proof of the exemplary way in which the town is conducted and of the respectable character cf the workmen who have been engaged in connection with the building of the freezing works, &c., is afforded by the fact that while over a hundi’cd strangers were working in the place not a. single offence against law and order was reported. The Matamai Meat Preserving 'Works have commenced operations, plenty of rabbits coming forward. Mr Connor’s goods appear to suit (lie public taste, and orders from a distance arc coming to hand.
