The Foxton Herald reports a notableinstance of self-sacrificing generosity. About two years ago Jack Shortt, a Foxton boy, lost his sight through the explosion of a live shell which he found after the Territorial artillery had been training. Mrs G-. F. Dalefield, senr., of Kairariga, was so touched by the incident that she set about raising a fund to assist the lad, by the sale of flowers,, seeds and other products of her. garden. The sum of £l5O 6s has now been raised in this manner. The' above amount was made without a single donation being asked for, and the majority of the bunchps of flowers and packets of seed were sold at 3d each. With the exception of part of the seeds and bulbs, everything sold came from Mrs Dalefield's garden. The sum.aimed at was £IOO, but a quantity of packets of seed was left on hand. This, ..with flowers sold, and a sum of £5 17s 3d given in small donations, has "brought the total to £l5O 6s. Jack Shortt is now in the Jubilee Institute and" his grateful parents state the money has been banked to enable him to be started hi a trade when he leaves the Institute.
