MANAWATU RACING CLUB,
As it is within easy reach, both by rail and road, the summer meeting of the Manawatu Eaeing Club, which opens at Awapuni on Thursday, is being anticipated with a good deal o( pleasure by the sporting public of this district. The quality of the programme submitted is usually of a high standard, a' circumstance which accounts, in no small degree, for the popularity of this fixture. This year's meeting has drawn good fields which should produce first class racing. The principal handicap of the day is the Manawatu Cup of 800 sovs., while the P.N. Stakes, a w.f.a. race with penalties and allowances, is set down for decision on the middle day, Friday next. Given, fine Aveather there is every indication that the club will enjoy a successful meeting. The first race is timed to start at 12 aioon and the programme is as follows: TOKOMAKU HURDLES HANDICAP,
It is a very disappointing field which has survived.the final payment for the Opening event. By reason of his comfortable win at Feilding, Red Bams should be favourite on the day and the remainder of the runners will need to show considerable'improvement on their recent displays to have a chance of beating the top-weight. Diana's Lad has not impressed by his performances and Fine Aere, though a winner at Woodville, has disappointed too many tim.es ' to' rely on. Novar will probably be'the strongest of the opposition. He ran a moderate fourth -it Feilding but this course will suit him. Askari and Aurora Borealis, with their light imposts, have an outside chance and preference goes to the latter. If performances i 3 the reliable guide, tho prize ahould undoubtedly go to Red Bank. I MAIDEN PLATE (8.0), of 150 sovs.; 6 furlongs. If y stride Pahu Kilorell > The possibilities among the Maiden platers takes a wide range and form is represented in Ben Hur, Dancing Star, Hurly Burly, Kilorell, Leisure, Pari and Tigrano. Ben Hur's form at the local meetings were, to say the least, consistent and his chances read favourable in this field. Leisure wa.placed second at Feilding to Statuary with Pari in third berth. The latter has the speed but has been unlucky. On )this ' course, jhoweveij, 'he should have a better chance of winning. This trio, Ben Hur, Leisure and Pari appeal most, with a preference for Ben Hur Pari. • , TARARUA HANDICAP (hack conditions), minimum weight 7.11; of 200 sovs.; 1 mile and a furlong.
Make-up has been decidedly unlucky in recent outings but in allotting him 9.3 in a 7.11 minimum race the handicapper has treated him fairly. Singer is smart but at the distance may not be as good as either the top-weight or the one below him, Skyrider. The latter on Feilding running will be troublesome in this field. Eich Harvest will probably need the race but My Own and Balloon are due any time now. Eiriana-is entitled to much respect and that finishing run he put in at Levin will only need to be repeated, to see him collect in this race. Democratic and Dainty Ways have best form of the others. The "former has. done fairly well on the flat and "with only 21b above the minimum, must be given a show. He ran fourth in the Nolan Cup'.. The two who may be in at the finish aTe

On Thursday next, (Boxing Day), racing enthusiasts will be well catered for in respect of meetings, no less than six clubs holding their summer fixtures on that day. The gathering at Ellerslie, under the control of the. Auckland Racing Club, ranks as the most important fixture, while the Manawatu Racing Club's summer meeting at Awapuni, which will claim most attention locally, is rated next. Other fixtures for the holiday are the Taranaki and Waipukurau Jockey Clubs, with the Dune dm and Westland meetings 'to supply the racing in the boutn Island..
its present stage bears a fairly open aspect. Eabbi is in his right place as top-weight and on the strength of his performances this season he will be sent out favourite, if allowed to start. Last year's winner, Star Area, was given a run at Egmont but was not in the first seven. He is good _when in form but it looks as if he heeds another race or two yet. Cashier failed at Riccarton but that was not his right form. He can be, expected to do much better than that. Seatown will be the tough one and the fact that he ran fourth at Egmont suggests he will go close over this extra distance. Hoylake is not fancied by any large degree but. First Acre is a distinct possibility, in view of his creditable showings at Eandwick. The distance may beat Great Charter and Arrow Lad, though the capabilities of the latter in that direction are, as yet, unknown. Puithair has a luxurious poundage and looks like being a dangerous one. Singleton and Courageous are best of the others. The latter who is on the minimum, from which it was won last year, put up a very convincing performance when he ran second at Woodville and good judges are expecting him to go close in this. Eabbi is regarded a l s an unlikely stater and in his possibleabsence, a pair that deserve consideration are Seatown • Cashier. NUESEBY HANDICAP, of 200 sovs.; 5 furlongs.
Princess Betty and Lady Pam are the only two-year ?old winners in this field and the former, by running that good one Gesture to a. ne'ek finish at Woodville, will claim most attention on Thursday. Arajean has been very consistent without winning, but her winning turn is not far off. At Woodville she beat Princess Betty and it looks like that pair fighting out the finish of this race. It would be hard to go past Princess Betty GILLIES HANDICAP (hack conditions), of 200 sovs.; G furlongs.
By reason of his double win at Otaki, Cadland, who had not been raeed previously, will be a hot "pop" in this race. The top-weight, Ferndcn, has speed while Aeora, at the weight, is not harshly treated. The latter should do well this season. Blue Parper is one who can be ticked to win shortly and Dermod's recent showings are good enough to give him a chance. Of the others the most likely improver is Pa*iko. There is no doubt as to who will be favourite, but what will be 'next, it is difficult to say. It may be this order
Cadland Acora. FITZHERBEET HANDICAP, of 350 sovs.; 6 furlongs.
The top-weight has a soft spot for the Awapuni course and on the face of his double win at Feilding he will be one of the hardest to beat. Consent will be all the better for the racing he had at Kiccarton and he appeals as a likely one for this event. Arro v Lad, if reserved, will be sought afte-, especially if the going is at all soft while Aspiring is entitled to report after her Woodville performance. s Arikinui may be best of the others Avitn Gold Cure and Gold Dawn the likely lightweights. It will probably be left to the two top-weights:

Atholspear 710 Those which may be included among the possibilities in the concluding race are Singleton, if started, Ruanui, fßlimp, Admiral Drake, Stanchion, Atholspear, Manly, Briar Eoot and Imateagirl. Prom this it can be seen that the event bears a particularly open aspect. It looks as if a surprise is in store, but two who appear to have a reasonable chance of winning are Briar Eoot Atholspear.
