WEDNESDAY HALF-HOLIDAY.
RETAINED IN HOROWHENUA COUNTY. The annual request by the Department of Labour for Die fixing of the weekly half-holiday for business premises was received "at the meeting of the Horowhen.ua Comity Council, and was formally received, the effect of which action is to retain the present half-holi-day in the County—namely, Wednesday afternoon. The Chairman (Mr G. A. .Monk) remarked that the Prime Minister-had intimated that he to. seek authority for a universal half-holiday, and it was assumed 4 hat lie referred to Saturday. . Befoie that could be brought in, the Chairman thought, it would be necessary to have a referendum. He considered that the Council would be on safe grounds in receiving the Department’s communication and retaining the Wednesday half-holiday. Cr. Gimblett said that, as a farmer, he was rather in favour of Wednesday. To declare a 'Saturday Half-holiday in the country would be to inflict a hardship. The Chairman: They will not do that.
Cr. Gimtllett: I tli'ink. the poAvers that be are doing quite a lot that is not acceptable to the fanners. I Avould like the" Council to pass a resolution that, for the ensuing year, Wednesday be the half-holiday "in Ilie County. The Chairman: It is not necessary. We have already expressed our opinion and da not wish to alter it. Cr. Gimblett: They would say we don’t care.
The Chairman: Ah, yes, we do. The existing day suits. The letter was received.
