SATURDAY’S MATCHES.

PARAPARAUMU AND OTAKI THE SUCCESSFUL SIDES.

In dull but improving weather, me competition games were played on Saturday and they ’resulted in Otaki and Paraparaumu defeating the visiting teams, Weraroa and Shannon.' Batting was at a discount, except in on® or two individual cases; and as a result, some of the bowlers had their averages lifted considerably.'

OTAKI V. WERAROA. At Otaki, the match against Weraroa was in the nature of a bowlers’ .day out and some 'fine performances in this respect were witnessed on both sides. The home team batted first and put up 53, jtlie only man to reach double figures being F. S. Simcox, with 20. Five of the wickets fell to Bull, and the other five to Bennett. NOTES ON RECENT GAMES. With Otaki, Levin and Weraroa in close proximity at the top of the Horowhenua cricket championship table, interest in the welfare of these teams is now keen. Otaki, who have the advantage of having played Paraparaumu, have a tougher proposition today, when, on their home ground, they meet Weraroa.

MATTING WICKETS. Otaki have followed the example _ of the Weraroa club and are now playing their matches on a grass wicket covered with matting. This type of wicket is highly commendable, as it plays true under all conditions and saves batsmen from the bruises which they usually sustain when playing on the concrete or asphalt pitches. LEVIN GROUND. The wicket on the Levin Domain, which has recently been top-dressed, has been playing a little better of late, but even then, it caused the ball to rise and was responsible for the early dismissal of some of the best batsmen on both sides last Saturday. The Levin ground, which suffers as the result 'of hockey and football, is badly in need of top-dressing and should be sown with Chewing fescue, as rye grass is now in predominance and is hard to keep in order.

OTAKI V. PARAPARAUMU. Atmore was the star for Otaki on Saturday as far as batting was concerned, as he hit up 45 in short time. He will be an acquisition to the Horowhenua representative team. Rhodes made 14 and was not out when Lima’s wicket fell. Sievers and Flutey bowled well, Sievers taking eight wickets for 26 runs and Flutey seven for 12. Paraparaumu had only one batsman who could reach double figures. This was McCaw, who made 12 in the first innings. - Lynch bowled consistently and was responsible for the fall of several good wickets, while 11. Weggery took toll of Otaki’s tail.

LEVIN V. WERAROA. These old rivals met again, and, as was expected, their match proved full of interest. Levin compiled 111. Pringle made 35 and Harvey 21. The latter has been playing well of late and was associated with Pringle at an opportune time. This colt ’should do well. Baumber batted freely and was caught on the boundary by Bishop —a great catch. Baumber bowled consistently as well and came out with the best bowling average of the day, obtaining five wickets for 31 runs. This fine player represented Manawatu in the Hawke Cup match at Palmerston this week. O’Connor, France and Blake .were the double-figures scorers for Weraroa, the last named and McLeavey being associated in a last-wicket stand which added 20 runs before Blake was caught by Sharp off Hunter, leaving McLeavey not out with 9 to his credit. Bull bowled well for Weraroa, taking five wickets for 33 runs —just behind Baumber’s average. •
