FOXTON PORT PENALISED.
FLOUR SENT THROUGH WELLINGTON AND WANGANUI AT LOWER RATE.
Recently the Foxton Harbour Board became aware that the' port of Foxton was being penalised by shippers of flour in the South Island to the extent of 10s per ton or, in other words, flour could be brought into the district through Wanganui and Wellington 10s cheaper than through Foxton. A protest was made, but the distributors informed the Board on Monday that they could not alter the existing arrangements in the meantime. ' Mr A. J. Kcl'low urged a further protest. The position seemed to r><; that if the Foxton boats went to Timaru and Oamaru the reduction would be granted. Mr R. Edwards did not think the explanation of the distributors was satisfactory. Mr Kellow stated that if Foxton were placed on the same footing as Wanganui and Wellington, then ah the flour required for the district, and even the Dannevirke and Pahiatua dks tricts, could be brought _ through the port. The reply of the distributors to this suggestion, however, was that they "would nou have' enough flour at Lyttelton, from where the Foxton boat leaves, to supply , such a large area. Transhipment at Lyttelton "would soon eat up 10s. Mr C. Blenkliorn moved that a strong protest again be entered and that the Department be approached in the matter. The motion was carried.
