PATRIOTIC AID.

MEETING OF HOROWHENUA ASSOCIATION. The quarterly meeting of the Horowhenua County Patriotic Associatimwas held in the Whakatane Club rooms on Wednesday afternoon. Mr C. 3. Keedwell presided in the absence of the President (Mr P. W. Goldsmith), and there were also present Mrs T. F. Gibson, Messrs G. P. Catley, H. J. MeLeavey, J. M. Richards, -J. D. Hamilton, W. E. Kilsby, and the secretary (Mr F. P. Walklev). Apologies for absence were received from the President and Messrs C. F. Atmore (Otaki) and T. Clifford (Manakau). The secretary reported that during the quarter ended September 30th grants totalling £159 16s 9d had been made. Of this amount, £lO6 "was in .✓ respect of the Society’s own'district, the balance being on account of other Patriotic Societies or to men who had left the district. Several visits were received, during the same period, from men passing through who were in need of temporary relief, this being granted them.

The actions of the executive, in the grants made during the quarter, were approved. It was stated that the unemployment problem had become less acute since the last quarterly meeting, there being a noticeable falling-off in calls on th» Society during the last few weeks. Several loans to soldiers are being repaid. No fresh loans, were granted during the quarter. The report of the War Funds Council to October 4th disclosed a fair amount of activity, and assistance to various returned men.

The secretary was instructed to interview two Natives who were in critical health, with a view to continuing the assistance that they have been receiving.
