SHANNON SCHOOL COMMITTEE

MONTHLY MEETING. . The above meeting was held in the schoolroom last evening. Present; Messrs A. E. Ilyde (chairman), A. li. Hill (secretary), W. Bass, W. Radford, L. Christie, C. Hansman and L. Mark (headmaster). SEPTIC TANK. In reply to a suggestion from the Committee that if they. . contributed £SO towards the installation of a septic tank at the school the Board lin'd the balance of the cost, the secretary of

the Board wrote stating that the Committee is apparently under some misapprehension as to the cost of the buildings as required If or school purposes. The Committee is asked to contribute one-quarter of the cost of the septic tanks installation, exclusive of buildings. The Board proposes to charge

itself rather over £2OO and the Department. nearly £3OO in connection with the improved installation. This is the basis on which contributions for septic tanks outside municipal drainage areas can be finaneied by Boards. He stated that he was under the impression at one stage that the Committee had in fact Vaisod the necessary money, but in the meantime the question of a dental clinic arose. A grant has net yet been approved for a septic tank installation, but the Board will proceed .as soon as it receives a reply. He regrets that the Board is unable to accept on the basis .suggested in the recent letter whereby the Committee offers to contribute only about 11 per cent, of

the cost of the whole of the work.

The Chairman: According to this letter the cost is going to be between £6OO and £7OO and includes buildings.

It was decided that the letter be re ceivdcl.

VISITING COMMITTEE’S REPORT. ■ Mr Bass, a member of the visiting committee last month, reported that the school generally leas in good order. There were two serious matters which required attention, viz., the holes in the asphalt at the entrance door to the infant school and the other was that the doors in Standard 111. and IV. class rooms opened inwards, which were dangerous and he thought should be referred to the Board’s architect. He stated a number of minor repairs were needed to some of the window sashes, locks, blinds, etc., and the grass round the cricket pitch wants trimming. It; was decided to write to the Education Board pointing out that the doors in the two class rooms were a danger in the case of fire, and ask that they be altered to open outwards. Messrs Radford and. Han sin an" offered to put down concrete, where the asphalt has broken away at the entrance door to the infants room, the committee to find the cement and gravel. Their offer was accepted. It was also decided to carry out the minor repairs as recommended. GENERAL

A vote of thanks was accorded two Italian residents for kindly ploughing the plot at the school in readiness for potato sowing. Mr Marks (headmaster) reported that he aitd the staff-were of opinion that the holding of a school concert this year would disorganise the school work and they suggested holding- a sports meeting- instead. —The Committee agreed with the suggestion and it was decided that the sports be held on Saturday, 14th December, and that the Borough Council be written to and asked for the use of the Domain on that day wfith the right to make a charge.
