MAKERUA LAND SUBDIVISION.

If some. of‘ our old pioneers could have been with our reporter as he motored through what was once a vast, area of undrained swamp growing flax, toi bushes, etc., and knowing it then in its roughness wculd hardly believe that the dredge and the tractor could change such a wilderness into the lovely farms that skirt the roadside. Leaving the present main highway at Makerua, we cross the railway line, and start out on what will be the main highway a few years hence, for the new road is not snly perfectly level, but the distance to Palmerston North by a couple of miles. Evidence of improvement meet the eye on every hand. New homes, new cowbails, tractors, horses and men all doing their share, . and where once grew acres of rubbishy is now beautiful green pasture. The rich nature of the soil is evidenced by fat sleek cows, and the abundance of grass. Linemen are busy erecting poles and ■wires, for the settlement has increased to such an extent that the Horowheiiua Power Board considered it a paying proposition to lay on the juice tor light, heat and power. We were shown the site for the proposed new cheese factory, so shortly farmers may have the choice of supplying for butter or cheese. Plantations on many farms have got a good start, and even now are providing, good shelter. On reaching Longburn wc had to admit that we had passed through a portion of our county that had made the greatest progress in the last few years and most.certainly had a great future. The land advertised in this issued by Mr A. E. Hyde, of Shannon, gives those seeking land at a reasonable price and easy terms a great opportunity to purchase a portion of this fertile land ready for immediate use, and it is reasonable to assume that the sections offered will not remain on the market very long.
