THE FRIESIAN BREED.
MEETING OF THE N.Z. ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the Wellington Branch held in Palmerston North on Friday afternoon was presided over by Major E. A. Wilson, (Bulls). Others present were Messrs J. H. P. Liggins, hon. secretary (Tokomaru)> Fell, Longburh), W. J. feam.es (Hunterville), W. A. Kyle (Palmerston North), J. McLindeii. (Massey Agricultural College), and J. P. Kalaugher, secretary, N. Z. Friesian Associtiou.
The financial statement showed a credit balance of £46 together with £2O subsidies due from the N.Z. Frieeian Association.
Mr Kalaugher stated that the year had shown great progress for the breed, the demand from dairyfarmers for pedigree Friesians being very keen, while there was also a strong enquiry for grade Friesian heifers. Messrs Miekell Bros, deserved congratulations on the great record put up by their heifer, Hillside Leila, which at the age of 2 years 189 days produced 761.60 lb fat. H. North and Sons' great cow, Rose vale Queen Sylvia Triumph, last month completed her third consecutive production exceeding 9001 b. fat in a vear, her totals being 9861 b., 105.51 b., and 9041 b., easily a record ' for any breed in New'Zealand. Friesian herds had done well during the past season, — a Southland herd of 35 cows averaged 3971 b-- fat for 272 days—another of 48 cows 3691 b. fat, and another Southland herd had averaged 4401 b. under Government test. Breeders could look forward- with confidence for the prosperous future. FIELD DAYS.
It was resolved to arrange special Field Days open to members and to all others interested for inspection of Friesian herds and for demonstration purposes. Mr W. A. Kyle was authorised to arrange for a Field Day at Otaki on Friday, 6th December, and Mr McLinden was authorised to take steps to arrange a Field Day at the Massey Agricultural College at an carlv date. A. and P. SHOWS. It was resolved on the motion of Messrs Kyle and Eames to vote £3 3s tis prize money for pedigree Friesian calf classes at each of the following
shows: Rangitikei at Taihape, January 29th, 1 30th. \ Horowhenua at Levin, January 30tn, 31st.
Feilding, February 4th, oth. Marton, February 27th. Waimarino at Raetihi. HIGH PRODUCTION. To encourage the placing of pedigree Friesians on Government Semi-Official of Official Herd test it was decided to, award an inscribed Gold Medal each year to the cow in the Wellington Branch district which gives the highest percentage of butterfat above the minimum required for a Certificate of Record, records made at Massey Agricultural College to be eligible for this competition. PROVINCIAL GROUP COMPETITION. Roval Show, Invercargill, December 10th—12th. The question of sendinga Wellington Provincial Friesian team in *•' conjunction with the Walrarapa Branch was discussed. The N.Z. Friesian Association had granted £ls" towards transport expenses. The following breeders were named as having .specially good type animals suitable for inclusion. O. A. Cadwallader, Greytown, cow, yearling heifer, yearling bull. W. J. Eames, Hunterville, cow, 3-year-old heifer, yearling heifer. E; Openshaw, Marton, 2-year-old bull. A. R.
