FISHING SEASON OPENS TODAY.

DISTRICT STREAMS WELL STOCK

The prospects for the trout fishing season which opened in this district on. Monday are apparently considered very favourable for there has been a good demand for tackle and anglers' general requirements while a fair ninnier or* licenses have already been taken out. It is expected that the demand for licenses will improve during - thy first few days of the season. The streams throughout the district are reported t.) be well-stocked and the Ohau river, it is anticipated, will provide excellent sport. During the 1928 season 70,000 brown fry, L 5,000 rainbow fry, and 500 brown yearlings were distributed in the waters around Levin, while' at Otaki 21,000 rainbow fry, 500 brown ye tidings and 800 rainbow yeirlings weie liberated. Tokomaru, \Vaikana3 and Shannon also received a consignment, while at the dams at Mangahaj 1225 rainbow yearlings were liberated. The latter locality is described as an angler's paradise.* The Mauawatu river, Avhich incident!}' has not been patronised to any extent by local anglers, contains broAvn and rainbow trout, and provided excellent sport during the past season-, mor.3 particularly in the upper reaches. In the southern portion of the district the Waikanae has proved a popular stream especially avHli week-end parties from the city, and these Avaters have also been kept well stocked. Altogether the season promises to b-3 a good one and the reports of substantial cat'.'hes which should come to hand an a few days Avill no doubt, bo followed by an increase in the number of licenses issued.
