SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONTHLY MEETING.
•The above meeting was held in the Schoolroom last evening. Present: 'Messrs A. E. Hyde (chairman), A. 11. Hill (secretary), A. Richards, Bass, C. Hansmann, R. Christie. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs W. Radford, L. Jones and D. Ellwood. CONVEYANCE OF CHILDREN, The secretary of the Board wrote in reference to the conveyance of children from Kingston road, stating that an ararngement hsys been made whereby the Board agrees to contribute towards the cost at the rate of 6d per child per day actually conveyed, plus half the difference between the capitation thus arranged and 'the whole contract charge of 9 S per day, the remaining half of this difference to be provided by the parents and paid by them to the contractor, the Board undertaking so far as this latter half is concerned no liability whatever. The committee were asked to forward a description of the vehicle, stating whether it provides cover for inclement Aveather, the number of seats it provides, also whether they approve of driver. The conveyance will be under the" control of the School Committee in conjunction with the Headmaster.
The committee decided to leave the matter to Mr Mark, headmaster, and Mr Christie to deal with. SUBSIDY GRANTED. The action of the chairman and MiMark in approaching the Board for a subsidy of £4 to enable the committee to have the plot of ground between Mr Mark's residence and Mrs Retterj's property put in order for experimental purposes was approved of. The chairman stated that, he had since received advice that the subsidy has been granted, and he had put a man on to scythe the plot. It was now proposed to have it ploughed and prepared.
Mr Mark reported that Mr J. Phillips had offered to donate two ewt. of seed potatoes for use in the plot. A letter of thanks is to be forwarded to Mr Phillips for his donation and a vote of thanks was accorded the Chairman and Mr Marks for the action they had taken in procuring the subsidy. SEPTIC TANK.
The chairman reported that the septic tank fund had benefitted to the extent of £l3 16s Id as a result of the children's fancy dress ball, thus bringing the amount in hand towards tin fund up to £55 6s Id. The secretary was instructed to write to the Education Board pointing out that the Committee now have in hand a matter of £55 towards the septic tank which they consider should be sufficient' as their contribution, so far as the septic tank and plumbing work is concerned, the Committee being of opinion that they should not have to contribute towards the cost of the building, pointing out that the present building badly requires attention. GENERAL. Mr Christie reported that the earth drains in the playground want cleaning out, also that the urinal and taps require attention. It was resolved to engage a man for a day to do the necessary work. Also to offer for sale a tank and barrel. The headmaster reported that the attendance had not been very good before the holidays, owing to the 'flu and wet weather. This week there had been an improvement, that day being the highest since he had taken over, when 316 were present. The roll number before the holidays was 323. On resuming this week eight new scholars were admitted and four were lost.
Accounts were then passed for pay ment and the meeting terminated.
