FARMERS SUPPORT SUPERTAX PLAN.

STRATFORD, August 21. That the small farmers are being led by the wealthy landowners in regard to the resolutions passed opposing the Government'land super-tax proposals was the opinion expressed bv Mr H. A. Hunt, secretary of the' Stra"tford Farmers' Union when the meeting decided ■to support the Government in their proposals. Mr Hunt went on to say that the small farmer Avould not be greatly affected. The chairman (Mr H. J. Marchant), in supporting Mr Hunt, said that the agitation was coming from districts where there were squatters who would be called upon to contribute their just share to taxation.. Mr N. B. Fryday stated that New £ealanders who fought in the war had fought for the holders of big estates, and the latter should be compelled to contribute equitably towards the war debt. After some further discussion it was decided to support the tax as a temporary measure.
