-PROPOSAL TO LICENSE BOOK-

MAKERS,

A proposal to license bookmakers is being sponsored by Mr, T. Makitanara, Government member for the Southern Maori district. \ When the Gaming Amendment Bill standing in the name of Sir George Hunter (Waipawa) is in the committee stage, Mr Makitanara intends to move to add the following clauses. (4) Every racing club which is authorised to use. the totalisatpr shall from time to time, on the application of any per<soh who is, in the opinion of the committee or other managing body of the club, a fit and proper person to be so licensed, grant a license to that person to enter 011 «any racecourse used or occupied by the club, and there to carry on business as a bookmaker;.-(b) every license to be for the period the club thinks fit, and . the dub may charge any fee not exceeding £2O for every day of the currency of it. Mr Makitanara further seeks to secure the repeal of the section in the Act making it an offence to bet with, bookmakers. ' . ‘ < „ The Bill sponsored by Sir George Hunter merely aims to secure the telegraphing of totalisator investments to the secretary of a racing club, and to permit the publication of dividends.
