BOY SCOUT MOVEMENT.
The recently inaugurated Boy Scout movement in Shannon continues _to make steady progress. On Wednesday evening a meeting of the committee was held when there were present: Assistant Scoutmaster, P. Bass; the Mayor (Mr E. Butt), and Messrs J. T. Bovis, B. Brann, C. Cronquest, H. J. Pell. H. Hudson, J. Armes( secretary) and Rev. Mr Farnell. . ' • In the absence of Scoutmaster laylor, assistant Scoutmaster Bass reported that at the last meeting of boys 23 were present and there had been an average attendance of tAventy since the troop Avas started. At the last meeting the boys Avere put through their “tenderfoot” test and he was pleased to state that practically all Avho had been examined had passed. He reported that the troop had now received the necessary official recognition, warrants having been issued proclaiming Mr B. G. Tayler, Scoutmaster, and Mr P. Bass, Assistant Scoutmaster. The boys Avere now ready for enrolment and the question of obtaining uniforms would have to be faced. After the committee had expressed their pleasure at the progress being made by the movement, Avays and means Avere discussed for obtaining the uniforms, during which it Avas pointed out that if the material for the shirts is procured and then made up, these along Avit-li the other equipment would run into a cost of approximately 17s -6d per boy as against £1 8s if the whole equipment is purchased. The secretary stated that the sum of £2O was required to place the matter )f uniforms on a proper footing. The uniforms will be Issued to the boys, who make repayments to the committee from their oavh earnings, this being pne of the rules of the movement. But in the first place the committee purchase them. _ , It Avas finally decided witli a view to raising the money to issue honoiaiy members tickets at one shilling each and thereby lay the foundation of the required amount. It is hoped to be able to issue the uniforms in about three -weeks or a month’s time.
The question of alloiving boys under the agd required for a Scout, to joint up Avas discussed, Avhen it Avas decided that all boys at present in the moA’ement who can pass the tenderfoot list be included v as members of the troop. Owing to the present hall being too small to carry out the training satisfactorily, a committee Avas appointed to make enquiries for a larger hall, -with poAver to act. The Assistant Scoutmaster reported that Mrs C. Cronquest had. very generously offered, to donate a flag. Mrs Cronquest Avas accorded a vote) of thanks and a letter to this effect is to be fonvarded to her.
It Avas decided that two committeemen be present each Aveck at the practices held by the boys.
