THE EQUAL PAY PROBLEM
It is being noted with surprise that men in the British Public Service are beginning now to demand equal pay for women. This is due, however,- not only to a sense of justice, but, in some respects to their discovery that the flood of women into the Service has been increased by thte fact that their pay'is lower, and therefore there is a tendency to accept them .more easily. With equality, they consider the woman menace may decrease, but some of the females are wondering if this will be .so., so great is the aptitude our sex shows for such work. Equal., pay in the Public Service does not exist in many countries. The ex-Prime Minister of Denmark, Mr Zahle, states" that "equal pay to men and women has been secured in my country, with the admission of women to all public posts, except in the Church." He claims this as resulting from, the franchise bestowed in 1915, but this . reasoning does not hold good as regards other lands. The Irish Free State also initiated this equality reform in the Pub: lie Service a few years ago.
