SHANNON BOWLING CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING. The above meeting was held in tho Club's Pavilion last evening, there being a good attendance of member. PRESIDENT'S REPORT.
The President (Mr A. fl. Morgan) report was as follows: — Gentlemen and Fellow Bowlers—ln
presenting my address on last season s transactions it gives me the utmost pleasure to be able to record the passing of another highly successful, sociable and beneficial season. We have nei haps had seasons of greater success c 0 far as the winning of trophies were concerned and I still have vivid mem•ories of one in particular when we held at one time practically all that
we played for. But in spite of it being a lean season with us so far as trophies were concerned we improved tn-er.tly our sociable standing with outside clubs. Not only did we play cup and shield matches with these clubs holding the trophies, but we had several iiitflr-club games with such clubs as Levin, Foxton, Otaki, Northern, Plimmerton.and Terrace End. I wish especially to mention Plimmerton and Northern as .these two clubs had not hitherto played many games with us; if at all and they are two clubs that are now firmly established on our list of friends. Unfortunately , weather conditions last season were not good
and often games had to be abandoned or postponed on account of rain. The season was opened abut the usual time after the untiring efforts of many helpers who prepare the green, trimmed hedges and saw to the numerous jobs about a bowling, green. To those gentlemen our sincerest thanks are duo The first tournament, that of Laboui Day, was again a great success. The Tiiangular Shield matches were < very enjoyable events and although your club was not successful we heart-
ily congratulate Foxton in its welldeserved win. The Dixon and Manson and BanCups were played for but without success; the Shannon bowlers in each case upholding the honour of the club, both on the greens and off. Kinneberg Feathers won by Mr Quarrie and team who are to be congratulated. Last season we tried'a new scheme for playing championship singles, pairs <and rihks, and it met with general approval We were able to get the matches
finished early and so gave us time, tor other tournaments. We held one electric light tourney in which outside clubs were included. This proved a most successful function and would be worthy of consideration for the future. I am pleased to see that so much
interest was taken in the play for our local trophies. These games, usually .played in the evenings, are a source of great- amusement as well as of revenue; and should be encouraged. Touching on the electric light I am pleased to see that this year it has more than paid for itself. It was gratifying to see that our club was further afield; at the Palmerston Tsorth
Easter Tournament, and at the Dominion tournament at Wellington. These vmts and games broaden one's outlook on bowls as well as assisting on the general improvement of play. Financially we are in a sounder position than we were last year. Last
year's balance sheet showed a debit balance of £5 18s, while this year we can show.a credit of £2. And upon the financial statement I have to congratulate our very efficient for the very able way lw nas managed our affairs. Our heartiest thanks are due to him. The financial statement is all the more gratifying when .
we realize that we had to meet an account of £l3 8s 9d for timbering the green. I wish to offer the sincerest thanks of the club to the members of the Croquet Club, without whose assistance we would have difficulties in carrying on Having the Croquet Club adjoin-
ing is perhaps the most sociable feature enjoyed by the bowlers Afternoon tea worries are shouldered by the ladies and we can always rest assured that not only will our own members be well provided for, but that our visitors will be treated right royally. 1 have already stated that the past sea-
son was in every way a most successful one; but that was the result wholly and polelv of the unselfish woric and
energy of my. committee, secretary and tfreenkeeper," as a committtce the gentlemen vou elected at the last annual meeting' would be difficult to beat_ There was perfect harmony in spite of the many difficulties we had to meet pnd my heartfelt thanks are due to
those members who assisted me so loyal] v. I oiilv trust the incoming president may be- blessed in a similar maii"°l extend the thanks of the club to our greenkeeper, who gave a great deal of time free in the early part ot the season, and so enabled us to show a credit balance. He had to work undei adverse aonditions. The mower, towards the end of the season was out of repair and would not cut as short
as he would have liked; and there was the wet season to contend with. I wish to thank also Mr C. Grey tor the presentation of a trophy, the game* for which were interesting and popu-
In most clubs, of course, we have the growlers and here too perhaps a tew of us are inclined at times to reel somewhat dissatisfied. Gentlemen, firstly I say we are lucky to have a club at all. .. , Secondly, we are lucky to be able to play bowls on such a low subscription,
and thirdly, it would be difficult to find a club where good fellowship and sociability is stronger. I appeal to ,the growlers not to growl, but to help by kindly advice and a little work. We want everybody giving a little push at '.i the wheels, not a few sweating alone in the shafts. Gentlemen, I congratulate you upon the very successful, pleasant
and congenial season that w,c have just left behind us and I trust the future may be of the same high order. Adopted. BALANCE SHEET. The balance sheet submitted showed the Club to have a credit balance of £2 6s M, as against a debit balance of £5 8s lid the previous season. ELECTION OP OFFICERS. It was decided that the opening day this season be held on a Saturday, the date to be fixed by the General Committee.
The question of admitting ladies as members of the Club was discussed, during which it was pointed out that in the South the game had become very popular with the ladies. It was deeid ed that they be allowed to become members of the Club, the.subscription to be £1 7s 6d. On the motion of Mr A. H. Morgan the following remit is to be forwarded to the Centre to be carried on to the Dominion Association: "That in Dominion tournaments 'section play be completed before carrying on with successive post section games." Mr C. Hook pointed out that after the recent heavy rain he had noticed there was a like of water in the middle of the green. He was of opinion that it was important this depression should be filled in immediately. It was decided that it be a recommendation to the Green Committee to see if something can be done to remedy the trouble.
The following new members were elected:—Messrs C Stem, L. J. Mark, G. Telfer and H. Hudson. After a hearty vote of thanks had been accorded the retiring officers, the meeting terminated.
