PLUNKET SOCIETY'S NEEDS.

COUNTY GRANT TO OTAKI

BRANCH.

NO CONTRIBUTIONS FOR SUB-

BRANCHES

Following upon its recent grant of £7 10s to rhe Levin branch Of the Plunket Society, the Horowlienua bounty Council on Saturday received application for assistance from the Shannon sub-branch and the Otaki branch of the Society.

The Chairman (Mr Monk) said ha had feared that a position such iu this would arise. The Council had probably made a mistake in the manner of its vote; not that he was. of the opinion that the Council should not contribute something to the .work in its present stage, but there were two branches in the district, with headquarters at Levin and Otaki respectively, and while the former operated wholly in the. County the other extended into the Hu'tt and Makerua Counties. He thought that the Council should come tc a definite conclusion, as to; what amount of money it was prepared to contribute to the Plunket movement and let that amount be divided between the two branches. The Council recehe requests from Waikanae, Manakau and Te Horo, which were sub-branches of Otaki. It should "be laid., down-that the Council could only contribute to the one Society, a iu! not to sub-branchesJ It should be 1 the duty, of the two branches,on receiving grants,' to make due allowances to the sub-branches, as, a grant was made towards the maintaining of a nurse in a particular district. As the Council had contributed to Levin, he thought that it would be justified in contributing to Otaki, but it ! must stop at that. The Chairman's views were endorsed j by Cr Gimblet, who moved that the Otaki branch be granted the sum of £5 ss. He pointed out that, as £7 10s had been voted to Levin, the proposed grant to Otaki would be about proportionate on the basis of valuation.

Cr. Catley seconded the motion,

The Chairman said he must agree with the motion, because the Otaki branch had just as much right to mak;; a request to the Hutt County Council as to this Council.

Cr. Ryder was of the same opinion.. The motion was carried; and it was further decided that, as Shannon is a sub-branch of Levin, the Council cannot see its way to make a separate contribution in that direction.
