SPEED RESTRICTIONS IN THE COUNTY.

TWENTY.FIVE MILE LIMIT (THROUGH TOWNSHIPS. TRAFFIC-SIGN REQUIREMENTS TO BE REPORTED ON. Without discussion the Horowhenua County Council, on Saturday, • unanimously passed a resolution, moved by Cr. Ryder and secondedt by Or. Colquhoun, constituting a by-law to re-strict the speed of motor vehicles to 25 miles -in hour whilst passing through the townships on the Ns.' 1 and No. 60 Main Highways, the former being the route which runs through the county from the south and turns north of Levin to proceed via Foxton, whilst the other is the road which leaves Queen Street and proceeds due north to Palmerston. At an earlier stage of the meeting a circular was received from the Transport Department setting out certain requirements in regard to the erection of traffic signs. The Chairman (Mr Monk) stated that the new by-law would necessitate the erection of further signs, and apart from that others were required. He did not think that the roads should be over-loaded with signs, because they might become confusing, but those suggested by the Department at present were quite advisable, because those who travelled in a strange locality were absolutely dependent on such signs.

On the Chairman's motion, seconded by Cr. Colquhoun, the circular was referred to the County Engineer, with instructions to furnish a report as to the requirements. The Railway Department also forwarded a circular, which contained directions for the erection of the signs known by the name of St. Andrew's cross and which bear the words "Railway Crossing."

The Chairman remarked that these signs had been in existence at most of the railway crossings in the County, but under the Motor Regulations local authorities were now made responsible for erecting such signs. The Engineer was instructed to report as to places where the crossing signs would be needed.
