WEEK-END FIRES.

FIRE AT SHANNON. . A fire took- place at Shannon on Sunday which destroyed a four-roomed residence in Thompson Street owned l>y Mr J. S. Wilkinson and occupied by Mr and Mrs Goyle and their child. The occupants went to bed about 9 o'clock, leaving everything apparently safe. Just before 11 o'clock Mrs Coyle was awakened by a smell of smoke and investigation revealed that the baek part of the house was in flames. Mr and Mrs Coyle made a hurried exit and gave the alarm, but the Fire Brigade could do nothing as there jwas no fire plug in the vicinity. The •cause of the outbreak is unknown. There had been a fire in the kitchen range during the day and it was apparently in'the kitchen that the outbreak originated. There was an insurance of £450 on the house in the National Company, and £125 on the furniture in the Provident Provincial, but Mr Coyle is a heavy loser over the insurance. The reflection, of the fire was easily visible from Levin.

HOUSE DESTROYED AT PALMERSTON. About 6" o'clock on. Sunday, a twostoreyed house owned by Mr E. A. Port, of Palmerston North, and occupied by Mr F. Lethbridge, on the Aorangi Road, was totally destroyed by ;fire. The outbreak was discovered while the family was at tea. The building was an old one and the flames made such rapid progress that the occupants were given little chance of saving anything. A fire had been burning in.the sitting room, and when the door leading thereto was rc-opened the room was found to be a mass of flame. The building and contents were insured, •but both Mr Port and Mr Lethbridge are heavy losers.
