MODERN JEAN VALJEAN.
ARREST OF EDITOR. CHICAGO, June 23. The classic tale of Jean Valjean, in Victor Hugo’s “Les Miserables,” Avas rwalled here yesterday. The editor of a local society magazine, receiving a comfortable salary and moving in the best American society circles, Avas arrested as an escaped convict. It appears that- his original crime was a solitary hold-up Avliich netted him less than a pound, but which Avas mificient to send him to hard labour for a term of years. The story of ,;:s escape is as dramatic as anything described in novels. “After I had served a few months,” he said, “ I was out at work with the road gang one day. When the guards were not near I asked a giant negro who could sling a sledge-hammer with precision to take a swing at my shackles. If he luid missed he would have smashed my ankle, but the bIoAV landed true, and a little later I escaped into the thicket.”
The information leading to the discover.- of the man's identity came, it is alleged, from his wife, from whom he was separated.
