YOUNG MAN'S NARROW ESCAPE
STRANGE CAR COLLISION AT FOXTON. Mr Harry Huff, a 'Avell-known Foxton young man, had a very miraculous escape from being killed in Main Street at 1 o'clock on Monday afternoon (says the Herald). He was siting astride his bicycle which was pulled into the gutter in front of the billiard room Aviien a car driven by Mrs G. Coley, junr., pulled in toAvards the kerb in front of Walls' shop. The car Avas practically at a standstill, the brake being held down by Mrs Coley. Avhen her foot slipped and the car jumped forward and charged doAvn on Huff. There were two other bicycles parked , against the kerb in front of the billiard room,, and-these the car caught and dragged along. Huff seeing the car approaching, attempted to push his bike into the road, but the ear caught him and knocked him doAvn in front of the radiator betAveen the front wheels. Continuing on. the ear struck a "Baby Austin" also parked in the kerb in front of Mr Mattar's shop and sAver\-ed out into the road in front of Whyte 's Hotel, Avhere it Avas brought to a standstill Avith Huff still underneath and with his head almost under one of the AA-heels. 1 " Had the car proceeded another foot or so he must have been killed outright. A crowd soon gathered and Huff was release! from his position under the car, Avhere he Avas all doubled up, badly shaken and Avith many superficial cuts and abrasions. " The three bikes AA-era still jambed under "the car, all badly smashed. The "Baby Austin," Avhich belonged to Mr G.'Rough, and Avhich was fortunately unoccupied at the _ time, was in the gutter alongside Avith one front and one rear wheel smashed. Huff av.is conveyed to the doctor's/ Avhere an examination showed that he had fortunately escaped serious injury but he Avas badly shaken and bruised. The cause of the accident was due to the fact that Mrs Coley is not aecuatomtj to driving a geared car, having purchased a geared vehicle only a few days ago. Mrs Coley, however, stuck to the wheel,'and ultimately managed to bring the ear to a standstill.
