Parata, v From the kick-off Horowhenua, by opening up aincng their backs, placed Manawatu on the defence and during one of these bouts, S. Graham cut in prettily; but a forward pass spoilt the effort. A penalty kick to Horowhenua in a good position saw Taylor miss badly. The home team continued to attack,- L. Horowhenua continued to be ag- J gressive and twice Stevenson after beating several opponents was giassed when within, close range of scoring. Finally a penalty for off-side allowed Heize to elsar. The home team continued to press and only faulty handling prevented a. score. In one of the rushes a score was averted by Crawford kicking into touch. Manawatu received the ball fiom the liue-out, Heize finally getting possession, kicking well down the field and following the ball up. The game now became exciting, and uro-ed on by their supporters, Horowhenua dribbled the ball into ■ Manawatu's territory where a. fine piece of passing between Stevenson and'Taylorwas followed up by a solid rush for Manawa.u'E Hue whicli ended in Hanna securing from the ruck and scoring. Taylor failed to place his team in the L-ad. , Manawatu 15, Horowhenua 14. On the ball going into play the benefit of a free kick to Horowhenua was lost owing,to the ball not being kick(ecl the required five yards. A scrum was ordeied. The home team got tin ball and it was sent out among the backs, Taylor making a good effort to score, but Bramwell was equal to the occasion and grassed him. Horowhenua.were now -all out and had Manawatu hard pressed to prevent them scoring, one close shave being when Strange had to .kick into touch to save. A scrum resulted in Manawatu dribbling clear; but the home team again swept down, Taylor centreing, but his 'effort'was spoilt owing to one of his team getting off-side. Just, on the call of time, Fletcher, with a long kick, sent the ball to the other end, compelling Ryder to force. Horowhenua, despite their strenuous efforts in the last fifteen minutes, were unable to get a victory, Manawatu having the narrow margin of one point to the good. Mr J. O'Connor very efficiently controlled tlie game.
